Katchuwei - Making Friends and Influencing People

Katchuwei
Part 2
Making friends and influencing people

I’m playing this solo, so I have put together a number of cards and unit generators to control the setup and initial reactions of the African forces, I, of course, will be controlling the Stryker Company.

Game Brief:
1st Platoon is making contact with a local faction, the Marambe.  They are in control of the nearest town to the Katchuwei International Airport (Stryker Companies HQ location), to make contact the Company CO, Captain Ramirez, must have a sit down with the Marambe Warlord and agree terms of any alliance with him.  At the point 1st Platoon enter the town of Marambe the response to the US is unknown.

A very simple “response” roll was used to determine reactions
-0 = friendly
1 = -1 on the response
2-5 = +1 on the response timer
6+ = Aggressive
Once Ramirez is in the Warlords mansion the table changes to
-0 = friendly
1-5 = -1 on the response
6+ = Aggressive

It was going to take me 3 turns to navigate the streets to the warlords mansion (next time I’m going to add random event cards for obstructions etc), so things were going to be fairly tense by the time my Strykers rolled up outside, hopefully things would calm down then.

Turn 1: I rolled a 3 as the Stryker column rolled into Marambe, the streets were quite narrow and winding so I needed to go quite slow (in game terms I had to move at 1/3rd speed to make a single 90 degree turn, so only 20cm move for the Strykers).

Turn 2: The lead vehicle was almost in sight of the Marambe Warlords mansion when an RPG slammed down from a roof top and (surprisingly) hit the rear Stryker and (even more surprisingly) knocked it out, the troops inside bailing out from their burning vehicle, dragging an injured soldier with them.  At the head of the column a technical, mounting a DshK, opened up on the lead Stryker, multiple rounds penetrating and injuring soldiers inside.

Turn 3: The Strykers and troops were now in a terrible situation, the lead vehicle managed to slam into reverse and back into an ally, its troops, 1st Squad, dismounting and breaking into the buildings on either side, Stryker 2 pulled across the mouth of the mouth of the ally to protect Stryker 1,  2nd Squad dismounted into the same buildings that 1st Squad now occupy, Stryker 3 pulled up behind Stryker 2 and the HQ squad with the Company CO dismounted into the same buildings.
At the tail of the column though, 3rd Squad was in a lot of trouble, trapped in the street, using market stalls and doorways for cover, they were under sustained fire from two PKMs, an RPG and about 17 militia, their casualties were rising, their body armour proving surprisingly effective, that said, they put down accurate and destructive fire, dispersing some of the militia and dropping others.

Turn 4:  The militia were forced to give the US troops a little breathing space as they manoeuvred between the buildings and brought reinforcements from the mansion in the two technicals, it didn’t mean there was no fighting though, 2nd Squad was sent through the back alleys and buildings that separated them from 3rd Squad to link up with them and drag their asses out of the fire, which resulted in some brutal CQB, the Marambe militia getting the drop on the soldiers and injuring one of the them, the US troops would eventually wipe out the militia, killing all of them, but not before 3rd squad was put under even more pressure by the two technicals turning up to cut off the US line of retreat and to put the pinned down 3rd squad in even more danger with their DshK.

Turn 5: Unbeknown to the rest of the platoon Delta Fire Team from 3rd Squad was wiped out, all of its men lying motionless only yards from their burning Stryker and only yards from 2nd Squad that were there to rescue them.  Charlie Fire Team however, were bringing the hate, they were down to only 3 combat effective and their SAW was inoperable, but they gunned down some of the Marambe “elite” militia and dispersing them, though their troubles were far from over, they were still surrounded and were on the wrong side of the man road and on the far side of the burning Stryker, to get rescued without crossing the street in front of the two technicals, they were also going to struggle with their two casualties.  The Company CO tried to raise the rest of the company on the radio for some desperate support, but as should always be expected in these situations, the radios failed.

Turn 6: The militia closed on the remnants of 3rd Squad with fatal consequences for the US troops, 2nd Squad were close enough now to see it happen.  They instantly turned fire onto the two technicals in the street, destroying one with an M203 and shredding the other with 5.56mm.  Charlie fire team dashed into the street and used the burning wreck of the Stryker for cover, but the African militia had faded into the alleys, the destruction of the two technicals being too much for them to cope with.

Aftermath:  Ramirez watched as the body of one of his men was loaded into the back of a Stryker and other wounded were helped abourd, all under the watchful eye of Doc.  11 casualties, 2 T3, 8 T4 and 1 T1, not the bloodless result that Remirez had planned or hoped for, the ambush had come out of know where, from an enemy that had not been an enemy that morning.  He mounted his own Stryker, now crammed with the dismounts and injured and towing the damaged Stryker behind it.  The US troops had given much better than they had received, over 50 enemy dead littered the town as the lead Stryker nudged the burning wreck of a technical out of the way, but none of that made up for one lost Grunt.

Sorry, no pictures, my phone is broken and it deleted them all instead of uploading them, not really a problem as it looks terrible, I only have the US troops and vehicles at the moment, everything else, including the buildings… all in the pipeline though :D
